Heart warming story.

We loved this book about Pedro, a sad donkey who learns to see things differently when he meets a fun-loving monkey called Jezz. The illustrations are beautiful and really bring the story to life. It’s a great way to help children discuss their feelings, and also a reminder for children and adults to be open to seeing the good around us.

The Story Behind Pedro the Donkey

Pedro the Donkey began with a suggestion from a friend. I took pen and paper out into my backyard, sat in the garden and began writing his story by hand.

Pedro was a donkey who was so focused on the negative things in life that he missed the beauty all around him. Then Jez appeared—a magical creature, part orangutan, part monkey, full of joy and fun. As they walked together along a golden path, they experienced the same surroundings very differently.

For me, this story is about perspective. The way we look at things shapes our experience of life. Sometimes we become so caught up in what’s wrong that we stop noticing the lovely things that are there too.

But you can’t make someone see things differently. That has to come from within. What you can do is be a friend, listen and walk beside them. That part of Pedro’s story means a lot to me.

The illustrations were originally handpainted. As my skills as an artist grew, I brought those original paintings into Procreate and touched them up, taking care to preserve their original style. I wanted to keep the feeling of those first paintings—the part that came from my heart—while using what I had learned to help bring them to life.
